The Whimsical World of Two Aficionados

I finally had the chance to watch this powerful film about a campaign by Invisible Children. Its aim? To spread the word worldwide, educate and raise awareness of who Joseph Kony is, ultimately gaining enough support for his arrest.

Having only premiered yesterday, the video has already gone viral. It is a wonder how one simple idea, photo or video can easily be transferred around the world in a matter of moments all with a click of a button today. Truly the power of social media and the digital age.

After watching this film, I encourage you to further research the issue. As the video came to an end, I wondered to myself, why has the organization made all their focus on one person? Why have they not mentioned the widespread of this issue? While the film & organization focus on the awareness & ultimate capture of Joseph Kony, he is but only one person in the grand scheme of perpetrators involved in similar operations. While I do not deny that Joseph Kony is a person that should be stopped, I believe that the solution to this issue isn’t as simple as it is laid out to be. What will happen after Kony is captured? What will become of the organization? Will focus be transferred to raise awareness about other parts of the world, who too are struggling? I’m sharing this video for the reason of raising awareness, in the hopes that it will shed some light upon such practices.

It’ll only take half an hour of your time. watch it. educate yourself. like it. share it.

I’m strangely obsessed with this track at the moment.  I’m usually a sucker for a good mash-up. This is just so different from the mash-ups I’m used to, making it super intriguing. Combining Adele’s Set Fire to the Rain and Skrillex’s Kill Everybody, a beautiful concoction fittingly titled Set Fire to Everybody was created.  Nice job ca7!

As I browsed the daily news headlines, this caught my eye. I’m always a sucker for a good cover; make it a Christmas tune and I’m totally sold.  To make it even better, he’s Canadian!  Sean Quigley’s video of a classic Christmas carol went viral within a week of posting it online. I can definitely understand why it has had over a million views in less than a month.  What also caught my eye was that, at 16 years old, Sean recognizes the true meaning of Christmas; one thing that many of us have lost sight of.

Since it’s Christmas Eve, I couldn’t think of a better song to post than the Little Drummer Boy.  It seems as though the true meaning of Christmas has been lost in all our commercialism.  This song reminds us of what Christmas really means (aside from the birth of Jesus of course…).  As Sean put it in an interview, it’s about a boy who hears of the birth of Jesus. While he has no gifts or money for the newborn, he does have the gift of his drumming.  Although it seems that the gift is small, it’s more than enough.  The song reminds us that we don’t need all the luxuries in life.  It shows us that we should cherish the things we do possess.  Although the little boy in the song had nothing to offer, he still offered the one thing that he did have.  This Christmas season, take a step back from your hectic life, spend some quality time with your family, give up some time or donate to help those less fortunate.

Merry Christmas!

Here’s another version of Believe. Just for my partner in crime and her love for Queen B…Beyonce…I guess you could say it’s bringing two voices/artists we love together into one :p

This performance was from the 77th Academy Awards. The song was nominated for Best Original Song alongside:

Vois sur ton chemin from Les Choristes (I highly recommend this film)

Learn to Be Lonely from Phantom of the Opera

Accidentally in Love from Shrek 2

Al otro lado del Rio from The Motorcycle Diaries (winner)

It’s been a week, but since exams are done, back with another Christmas track. Straying from the classic tunes, this song is definitely one of my modern Christmas favourites.  From one of my favourite Christmas time movies, Polar Express, the song and the movie reminds us to never stop believing.  It reminds us that as we grow older, no matter how our lives are challenged and changed, there is always a gleam of hope.  While in the context of the movie, the meaning of believe is regarding remembering what made Christmas a magical time as a child (ie Santa), I think it also reminds us to garner the true spirit of Christmas rather than get caught up in what has become of this holiday.

Song: Believe by Josh Groban

…Did I mention that it’s also sung by one of my favourite artists?
